WHAT: The New York Premiere of CAPE OF GOOD HOPE.
Award- winning South African film CAPE OF GOOD HOPE is a
slice-of-life, multi-cultural romantic dramedy from
writer/director and producer Mark Bamford and co-producer
Suzanne Kay (daughter of show-biz legend Diahann Carroll).
This beautifully told story was filmed entirely on location in
the Cape Town coastal community of Hout Bay and centers around
a local Animal Shelter. The six central characters are Jean
Claude (ERIQ EBOUANEY), a refugee from war-torn Congo who
finds himself torn between love and the promise of asylum in
the West; Lindiwe (NTHATI MOSHESH), a single mother and
housekeeper trying to make a life for herself and her son
while finding a way out of the township; Sharifa (QUANITA
ADAMS) and Habib (DAVID ISAACS), a young Muslim couple unable
to have children of their own yet desperate to have a family;
Morne (MORNE VISSER), a recently widowed veterinarian who
wants to believe that true love can strike twice; and Kate
(DEBBIE BROWN), the emotionally guarded founder of the animal
shelter, who seems to relate better to stray dogs than to
people.
Filmmakers Mark Bamford and Suzanne Kay found inspiration for
their film through their experiences working as volunteers
with children and refugees.
CAPE OF GOOD HOPE received an Honorary Mention for the
People's Choice Award at Toronto and was the double winner of
Jury Prize for Best Film and Audience Award for Best Feature
in Austin. It also screened at Cannes as part of a special
