Capelo - who works as a teacher of design, drawing and lithography at Mexico's University of Guanajuato - also has spent time working with students at Springfield's Hamlin Middle School to create a mural there during his visit to Lane County this fall.

Five years ago, he was here for Fiesta Latina and worked with high school students to paint a mural at the Emerald Art Center.

Capelo's current exhibit at the Schnitzer consists of 10 large works on paper done in watercolor and ink. Painted earlier this year, they are strongly drawn, with a deep visual structure. The images are inspired by the natural world in Mexico, the artist has said, but he also finds inspiration in 13th century Spanish colonial ceramic designs.

Capelo works in a number of media.
