This textbook, a revision and expansion of A Manual for Articulatory Phonetics, is meant to explain to phonetics phonetics (fōnĕt`ĭks, fə–), study of the sounds of languages from three basic points of view. Phonetics studies speech sounds according to their production in the vocal organs (articulatory phonetics), their physical properties  students the principles that will help them approach any language and describe and mimic its sounds with accuracy.
