:MTB) announced today that Arthur Levitt, Jr. has rejoined its board as an advisory director.

Mr. Levitt became associated with M&T in December of 1987 following its merger with The East New York Savings Bank, where he had previously served as a trustee. After East New York converted from a mutual to a stock form savings bank, he continued his service as a director until July 1993, when President Clinton appointed him as the Chairman of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. Mr. Levitt became the longest serving Chairman of the Commission, completing his service in February of 2001. Before joining the Commission, Mr. Levitt owned Roll Call, a newspaper that covers Capitol Hill.
