Arthur D. Little to Create Uniform Concepts of the Future for U.S. Army.

Business/Technology Editors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 10, 2001

Technology and innovation firm wins $1.4 million Army contract to

prepare soldiers for combat in next decade

Arthur D. Little Arthur D. Little, Inc. is the world's first management consulting firm. Founded in 1886 by Arthur Dehon Little, an MIT chemist who discovered acetate, and co-worker Roger Griffin, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Arthur D. Little pioneered the concept of contracted technology research. , Inc., one of the world's premier management and technology consulting firms, has been awarded a $1.4 million contract by the Natick Soldier Center to develop concepts for an advanced combat ensemble that soldiers will wear in the next decade and beyond. This contract will be conducted under the Scorpion Integration Protection Analysis (Scorpion IPA IPA - International Phonetic Alphabet ) program. The Natick Soldier Center in Natick, Massachusetts Natick (Pronunciation IPA: /ˈneɪtɪk/) is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. Natick is located near the center of the MetroWest region of Massachusetts, with a population of 32,170 at the , is the R&D center for soldier-related programs for the U.S. Army Materiel Command Army Materiel Command can refer to:
  • Army Materiel Command (Denmark)
  • United States Army Materiel Command
  • Air Force Materiel Command
  • United States Army Aviation and Missile Command
.

"Technology is growing at an incredibly rapid pace. The Scorpion IPA program is an exciting opportunity to look at how we can use these technological advances to maximize the performance of the soldier of the future," said Cheryl Stewardson, Scorpion IPA Program Manager.

Arthur D. Little (ADL) will utilize new and emerging technologies to develop designs and mock-up mock·up also mock-up

, mechanical engineers, materials experts, chemists, and physicists - will incorporate technologies that focus on the performance of the human wearing the system, not just on the performance of the uniform and equipment.

"It is critical for us to create a system of protection for military personnel that not only improves their technical abilities, but also enhances their overall functionality and safety," said ADL Program Manager, Linda Pensotti. "What good is a combat uniform that gives a soldier high-tech communication and sensing abilities if it impedes his range of motion so he can't see who is standing next to him?"

ADL's work will comprise development of novel design concepts for protection, physiological monitoring and management, data and power networks and load bearing. Designs for the advanced combat ensemble may include technology that protects soldiers from chemical and biological agents, while also helping them to escape radar detection. The uniform may also include a hydration system In recreation and other sustained outdoor activities, a hydration system is an apparatus intended to promote its user's drinking enough liquid to support the physical effort involved in the activity.  that will enable a soldier to be his or her own water recycling system, complete with recycling "bodily fluids" into drinking water drinking water

. These design concepts are being jointly developed by ADL and the Natick Soldier Center for a broad group of military users - infantry, medics, engineers, military police, aviators Well-known aviators

While all of these people were pilots (and some still are), many are also noted for contributions in areas such as aircraft design and manufacturing, navigation or
, and special operators- but they may also directly benefit many civilian applications such as firefighters and law enforcement personnel.

The Scorpion IPA program seeks to improve human performance while increasing chances for survival. This is an essential goal of the Army as it shifts from organizing large groups of soldiers to deploying smaller units. By using technologies that allow these units to fight smarter and maneuver more quickly and accurately, the Army will be able to respond to a full spectrum of mission scenarios worldwide - from skirmishing in the streets of Panama City Panama City, city (1990 pop. 34,378), seat of Bay co., NW Fla., on St. Andrews Bay; inc. 1909. A Gulf Coast resort with amusement parks and excellent fishing, it is also a port of entry. The city's industries produce paper, clothing, and chemicals.  to tactical warfare in the arid mountains of Afghanistan.

ADL has a proven record of designing and assessing the performance of clothing and equipment for the Army. This contract is the second won by ADL in the last month under the U.S. Army Materiel Command. It follows a series of other work for the Army including Air Warrior, Force XXI Land Warrior, Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT MOUT military operations on urban terrain (US DoD)
MOUT Managed Object Under Test
), and Soldier Integrated Protective Ensemble.
