Artel Video Systems increases channel capacity by introducing DWDM fiber optic multiplexing to SL4000 line; digital video transmission products now transmit up to 48 non-compressed channels over one optical fiber.

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 6, 1996--To meet the need for more available channels and greater capacity per fiber, Artel Artel (Russian: арте́ль) is a general term for various cooperative associations in Russia, historical and modern.  Video Systems has added dense wavelength division multiplexing See WDM.  (DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

) capability to its industry-leading SL4000 line of multi-channel fiber optic video transmission systems. The new systems provide transport of up to 48 non-compressed channels utilizing only one optical fiber.

"We are proud to be the first to offer 12-bit video transport systems with 48 channel capacity," said Harold E. "Hal" Charnley, President and Chief Executive Officer, Artel Video Systems. "Our leading edge fiber multiplexing multiplexing, in communication, technique whereby two or more independent messages, or information-bearing signals, are carried by a single common medium, or channel.  capabilities provide a highly efficient and cost-effective solution for regional cable television systems, as well as traditional SL4000 applications within Regional Bell Operating Companies The Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOC) are the result of the U.S. Department of Justice antitrust suit against American Telephone & Telegraph. History , and interexchange and independent carriers."

DWDM uses laser-based optical transmitters with closely-spaced output wavelengths, or colors, to send multiple independent signals over a single optical fiber. Although Artel has always offered traditional WDM (1) (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) A technology that uses multiple lasers and transmits several wavelengths of light (lambdas) simultaneously over a single optical fiber.  systems, which carry two optical signals at widely spaced wavelengths, the latest DWDM technology allows the SL4000 to transmit/receive up to eight optical signals on each fiber.

Using DWDM, the SL4000 can transmit 48 non-compressed video channels and 288 CD-quality audio channels up to 40 km.  fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) may be employed to boost the optical signal without degradation. In that implementation, SL4000 systems able to carry 48 channels at an aggregate rate of 9.6 gigabit/sec. over hundreds of kilometers can be constructed at reasonable costs using commercially available components. As an overlay system, the combination of 12-bit quality, channel capacity and distance capabilities make the SL4000 DWDM more attractive than traditional network solutions including Codec equipped OC-48 SONET interoffice in·ter·of·fice

 and intercity transports.

The system architecture featured in the DWDM version of the SL4000 delivers the following benefits:

-- Scalabililty. Channels may be added incrementally as service

demands increase.

-- Reliability. Each group of channels is independent; if one

fails it does not affect other channels.

-- Flexibility. Optional bi-directional flow enables the user to

independently choose the transmission direction of each group of

channels.

-- Consistent, high-speed performance. The industry leading 12-bit

digital video transmission format ensures short-haul performance

on all channels regardless of the number of channels used.

-- Multi-service capability. Individual fiber wavelengths may be

used for other services (voice/data) which are unrelated to the

video service.

Artel is taking orders now for DWDM-equipped SL4000 systems, with availability within 90 days.

The SL4000 is a modular multichannel Using two or more paths for transmission or processing. It can refer to a variety of architectures including (1) multiple I/O channels between the CPU and peripheral devices, (2) multiple wires in a cable, (3) multiple "logical" channels within a single wire or fiber or (4) multiple  video transport system designed to provide maximum versatility, performance and bandwidth. It is widely used by major cable companies, Regional Bell Operating Companies, as well as foreign telephone and telegraph companies to meet their needs for uncompressed, long-distance contribution quality digital fiber optic transmission.

Artel Video Systems

Artel Video Systems, Inc., headquartered in Marlborough, MA, designs, manufactures and sells broadcast quality fiber optic video transmission equipment. Artel's products offer solutions to a wide range of applications where totally transparent transmission of video, audio and data over fiber is required. Artel currently lists among its customers television broadcasters, regional Bell operating companies, foreign telephone and telegraph systems, educational and medical institutions, cable television systems operators and U.S. government facilities as well as members of the Artel Link Program, a network of value-added resellers A value-added reseller (VAR) is a company that adds some feature(s) to an existing product(s), then resells it (usually to end-users) as an integrated product or complete "turn-key" solution. . -0- All trademarks and registered trademarks belong to their respective holders.
