Artecon announces industry's highest performing RAID system for small networks; LynxArray Series 3000 offers fault tolerance, true scalability, hot-swap components.

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 26, 1997--Artecon, a leading manufacturer and systems integrator specializing in open-systems UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
products and solutions for the commercial, telecommunications and government sectors, Wednesday announced its LynxArray Series 3000 RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) systems for substantial improvement in performance and data availability Refers to the degree to which data can be instantly accessed. The term is mostly associated with service levels that are set up either by the internal IT organization or that may be guaranteed by a third party datacenter or storage provider. .

This new series of open-systems RAID solutions features the extraordinary Lynx Array controller, which hit an industry-high benchmark of 4600 I/Os per second this week -- best among leading entry-level RAID systems for networks.

"We're pleased but not surprised at these I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

numbers since we've always used high standards for measuring our controller performance. Now that we're using an industry standard, apples-to-apples test, we expect to hit even higher numbers," said Michael Jensen Michael Cole Jensen joined the of the Harvard Business School in 1990. Currently, he is the managing director in charge of organizational strategy at Monitor Group, a strategy consulting firm. , vice president of engineering.

"This is also the only entry-level RAID system with hot-swap failover controllers, drives, power supplies and fans. When you look at what we have to offer -- especially considering cost per megabyte -- I don't think you'll find a more aggressive package."

The LynxArray Series 3000 systems are ideal for small to midsize networks that require outstanding performance for 27GB to 82GB of storage capacity at a modest price of 51 cents to 68 cents per megabyte.

Series 3000 systems ensure fail-safe operation of networks by providing global hot sparing for multiple RAID sets, automatic failure detection, background drive rebuilding and a comprehensive failure management system. Series 3000 advantages include:

--Scalability -- Grow from 27GB to 82GB, and beyond to terabyte

solutions, without having to discard any components.

Failover options can be added as required.

--Flexibility -- Multi-hosted controllers improve performance,

add redundancy and create higher connectivity. Support for

any combination of 3.5 inch or half-height 5.25 inch devices

such as tape drives make inline backup a viable option.

--Serviceability -- Hot swap To pull out a component from a system and plug in a new one while the main power is still on. Also called "hot plug" and "hot insertion," hot swap is a feature of USB devices, allowing an external drive, network adapter or other peripheral to be plugged in without having to power down the  removable controllers, disk drives,

fans and power supplies mean safe exchange of failed components

with zero downtime. Options include hot-swap removable CD, MO

and tape devices, which are unique among RAID systems.

--Density of packaging -- In only 7 inches, the user can pack 82G of

raw capacity and still have room for failover controllers,

yielding an unprecedented 52GB/cubic foot of failover RAID.

--Performance -- The LynxArray controller is based on an

Intel-486 microprocessor which clocks in at 4600 I/Os per

second. Ultra-Wide SCSI SCSI

 channels from host computer through

controllers to drives allow 40MB per second burst and 33MB per

second sustained transfer rates.

the RAID Advisory Board A Massachusetts-based organization founded in 1992 that was involved with education, standardization and classification of RAID storage systems. See RAID. , RAID technology is installed at 50 percent of all disk systems today, and most industry experts predict that it will approach 100 percent by the year 2000. RAID systems significantly improve the performance and data availability of the entire computing spectrum -- from desktop to supercomputers.

RAID systems guard against data loss with data redundancy, data regeneration and rebuilding. Continuous data access is possible by adding functional redundancy with hot-swap components so that failed components can be replaced without downtime. RAID-protected data storage systems are essential for mission-critical applications such as financial institutions, emergency services emergency services Emergency care '…services …necessary to prevent death or serious impairment of health and, because of the danger to life or health, require the use of the most accessible hospital available and equipped to furnish those services'  and Internet service providers Internet service provider (ISP)
