Art theory; an historical introduction, 2d ed.

Williams, Robert.

Written for beginning students of art history and anyone wanting a sound overview of the theoretical ideas on which western art history is based, this volume covers art theory from the earliest ideas in ancient Greece through the current ideas of postmodernism. The text references significant works of art to illustrate the theory discussed--presented in b&w and color plates--and includes a very useful annotated bibliography, organized by time period. Williams (art history, U. of California, Santa Barbara) writes ably and comfortably about difficult concepts, making this an excellent introductory resource. He has expanded the section on contemporary art for the 2d edition.
