Art shows throughout East Jerusalem's Old City kept secret to prevent harassment by Israeli forces.This year several Palestinian cultural activities in Jerusalem Jerusalem (jər  `sələm, –zələm), Heb. Yerushalayim, Arab. Al Quds, city (1994 pop. 578,800), capital of Israel. were
banned or disturbed by Israeli authorities. Citing that artistic
expression of one's identity is vital to any society, a collective
of approximately 60 young people is preparing "Al Quds
Underground", a hidden cultural festival on secret places in the
Old City.Actors, musicians, writers and other artists are preparing a
unique and unconventional festival with more than 150 small shows in
private spaces throughout East Jerusalem's Old City.Searching for
new ideas of artistic cooperation, the project unites members of
different cultural communities. The goal is to strengthen Palestinian
artistic capacity building and to express the identity of local people.
