Art is the core.

For years, we have been told we were to integrate all the disciplines (math, reading, writing, science, history, etc.) into our curriculum. This would make the art class valid. Many of the art teachers I worked with resisted the whole idea, feeling this would take away from their teaching of art.

Having been an elementary classroom teacher in a self-contained classroom, I found that as I taught art, all the other disciplines were already there.

As art teachers, we need to make sure students, parents, and administrators understand that art does not exist in isolation from other disciplines. Art truly is the core, and what we teach is truly important.
