Art in its own terms; selected criticism 1935-1975.9780878467433 Art in its own terms; selected criticism 1935-1975. Porter, Fairfield MFA Publications 2008 288 pages $22.50 Paperback N7445 It is rare that a fine artist is also a fine art critic. Fairfield Porter was one of those rare people. The new edition of the 1979 collection of his essays on art and artists from Rembrandt to his own contemporaries is still fresh. Fairfield had a clear style and strong opinions about art movements and individual artists. He admired the impressionists and William de Kooning, for instance. This collection of essays and reviews written between 1935 and 1975 mostly consider the world of art. However Porter also made note of how the outside world impinged on art and the ways in which art could influence everyday life. The essays are accompanied by many black and white illustrations of the works discussed. ([c]2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR) |
