The international world of auctions is glamorous, complex, high-powered, and highly influential in setting trends in style and taste; it is also notoriously mysterious and uninviting to outsiders. A weekend UC Berkeley Extension course next month offers amateurs the chance to become connoisseurs of fine antiques and learn more about the esoteric es·o·ter·ic

"The World of Fine Antique and Art Auctions" will take place on Saturday and Sunday, October 7-8, 10 am-5 pm, at Butterfield & Butterfield, 220 San Bruno San Bruno (săn br`nō), city (1990 pop. 38,961), San Mateo co., W Calif., a suburb on San Francisco Bay; inc. 1914. The auction world is an essential source for interior designers, antiques collectors, and those passionate about objects d'art, fine carpets, rare books, and fine art. It is here that decorators find important antiques for interiors, and serious and knowledgeable collectors discover superb examples of the finest decorative arts decorative arts, term referring to a variety of applied visual arts, both two- and three-dimensional, including textiles, metalwork, ceramics, books, and woodwork, as well as to certain aspects of architecture (see ornament), public buildings, and private houses (see .

This two-day course takes participants through the weekend-long process of auction previews and actual auctions. Students attend previews at Butterfield & Butterfield, a leading international auction house. They attend lectures by five of Butterfield's top specialists on topics ranging from Oriental ceramics, rare books, and contemporary painting to Arts and Crafts arts and crafts, term for that general field of applied design in which hand fabrication is dominant. The term was coined in England in the late 19th cent. as a label for the then-current movement directed toward the revivifying of the decorative arts.  furniture and silverware. With the knowledge gained from the Saturday session, participants then view (and many participate in) auctions on Sunday.

Instructor Diane Dorrans Saeks is a San Francisco author, editor, design lecturer, and feature writer who focuses on interior design, architecture, gardens, travel, and fashion. She is the author of books on interior design, architecture and style, including San Francisco: A Certain Style, California Country, San Francisco Interiors, and California Cottages. Her tenth book, California Interiors, was published by Taschen this past fall.
