Stordahl of South Salem South Salem is the name of several places in the United States:
  • South Salem Township in Kansas
  • South Salem in Ohio
  • South Salem in Westchester County, New York
, Oregon. Mr. Stordahl armed himself with a .22-caliber handgun and went to investigate.

Stordahl entered the garage and found fire and thick smoke. A young man suddenly emerged from the smoke. When Stordahl asked the intruder An attacker that gains, or tries to gain, unauthorized access to a system. See attacker, intrusion and IDS.  what he was doing, the teen advanced toward the homeowner. Stordahl fired a single shot, striking the youth in the neck. Stordahl then rushed back to the house and called 911. The young man died at the scene.

Investigators concluded that the intruder had entered through a side door and started a fire using boxes stored in the garage. He carried no identification and neither an autopsy nor a computer check of his fingerprints were able to identify him. Over the next few days no missing person complaint was filed fitting his description.

On April 22nd, the Salem Statesman Journal The Statesman Journal is the major daily newspaper published in Salem, Oregon, United States. It serves Salem, Keizer, and much of the Mid-Willamette Valley. It was formed in 1980 by the merger of the two main Salem newspapers, the Oregon Statesman and the  included a detailed physical and clothing description of the dead youth in a story about the incident. The young man's stepfather happened to read the account and brought it to the attention of the teen's mother, Wendy Vogt. The couple had separated a few months earlier, and in July of last year the youth's biological father had begun serving a six-year prison term for theft.

Vogt contacted police, met with detectives, and identified the deceased as her son, 16-year-old Anthony Chance Choate. She said that when Anthony did not come home, she became worried and spent days calling his friends in an attempt to find him. "I didn't want to think about going to the police because I didn't want to think about anything happening to him," she told the Statesman Journal.

Choate had apparently attended several parties with friends the night before the shooting. A friend had dropped him off near the Stordahl residence. It is not known why he entered the garage or started the fire, but the April 29th Statesman Journal reported: "Toxicology tests on Choate revealed that he had a blood alcohol content Blood alcohol content (BAC) or blood alcohol concentration is the concentration of alcohol in blood. It is usually measured as mass per volume. For example, a BAC of 0.02% means 0.02 grams of alcohol per 100 grams of individual's blood, or 0.  of 0.31, just shy of four times the legal limit to drive. He also tested positive for marijuana and cocaine." His mother said he was a troubled youth who had dropped out of school due to illness last fall and worked at a pizzeria to earn money.

Prosecutors said that Stordahl's version of the incident was consistent with the evidence, and Marion County Marion County is the name of seventeen counties in the United States of America, mostly named for General Francis Marion:
  • Marion County, Alabama
  • Marion County, Arkansas
  • Marion County, Florida
  • Marion County, Georgia
  • Marion County, Illinois
Deputy District Attorney Doug Hansen told reporters, "Everything appears to be accurate as to what he's telling us." On April 29th, a Marion County grand jury cleared the homeowner, concluding that he was indeed justified in using deadly physical force under Oregon law, which requires that at least one of three criteria be met: The person employing deadly force An amount of force that is likely to cause either serious bodily injury or death to another person.

Police officers may use deadly force in specific circumstances when they are trying to enforce the law.
