The incident happened at Grace House, at St John's Green, Percy Main, North Shields Coordinates: North Shields (or locally just Shields) is a town on the north bank of the River Tyne, in the metropolitan borough of North Tyneside, in North East England. It is located eight miles (13 km) east of Newcastle upon Tyne. , just after 10pm on Monday. A mattress in the corner of the car port was set alight by suspected arsonists. The flames spread to the roof and damaged the structure. All 12 flats in the building were evacuated, but residents were let back in within an hour-and-a-half. Crew manager Gary Newton, from Wallsend Fire station, said: "The blaze from the mattress spread and caused severe damage. There was only one vehicle parked there, which was slightly damaged. We suspect the fire was started maliciously." |
