Arroyo tries to rally Filipinos in face of crisis.

Manila: President Gloria Arroyo has sought to rally Filipinos as government, business and labour sectors to brace for the looming economic maelstrom Maelstrom, whirlpool, Norway: see Moskenstraumen. .

Addressing the Multi-Sectoral Jobs Summit at the presidential palace yesterday, Arroyo called on the three sectors to join hands and give attention to problems of workers forced to bear the hardships of the global downturn.

Arroyo said the three sectors are taking steps to save and generate jobs.

She said the government has already put together the Economic Resiliency Plan.

"Under this Economic Resiliency Plan, which is our stimulus programme, we will continue our unprecedented investments. I direct key agencies to show solid progress in bidding out and/or implementing major infrastructure and social projects under the 300 billion pesos (Dh22 billion) stimulus plan. We consider this the most important government initiative this year," she said.

Alongside taking steps to weather the economic storm, the President said her government is taking the economic downturn as an opportunity to push forward her administration's policy of promoting environment friendly jobs and energy independence.

Arroyo said the Economic Resiliency Plan categorises budget-funded energy-independence and environment-friendly jobs as "green collar jobs."
