While in the past winners were ranked across all industries, from number one to 469, this year the survey again divided the companies into distinct industry groups ranging from Aerospace to Temporary Help. More than 10,000 senior executives, directors and securities analysts were asked to rate the top 10 companies they admired most, regardless of industry. They were then asked to rank companies in their own industry on eight criteria, such as quality of products and services, innovativeness, financial soundness, and social responsibility. In the ratings, the company's performance earned Arrow an impressive sixth place in the wholesalers category, down one spot from its fifth place position last year.

Arrow Electronics is the world's largest distributor of electronic components and computer products, with 1998 sales of $8.3 billion. Headquartered in Melville, New York Melville is a hamlet and census-designated place in the town of Huntington in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York, in the United States.
