IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) enterprise products and integration services, announced today the formation of a new sales and technical support team focused on helping IBM Business Partners drive sales for IBM's blade server A server architecture that houses multiple server modules ("blades") in a single chassis. It is widely used in datacenters to save space and improve system management. Either self-standing or rack mounted, the chassis provides the power supply, and each blade has its own CPU, memory and product family. The announcement was made at Arrow's annual IBM Business Partner training event, May Days, which began May 17. Market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) has estimated that blade servers in general will account for one out of every four servers by 2007 and, according to IDC's Q403 Quarterly Server Tracker, in the fourth quarter of 2003, IBM had captured nearly half -- 43.5% -- of the blade server market. To help its IBM solution providers stay ahead of the blade implementation curve, Arrow created a Blade Server Enablement Team -- ArrowBEST. ArrowBEST is a group of sales and technical support experts specifically trained on and experienced with solutions employing IBM's BladeCenter technology who will provide support in the form of solution architecture assistance, product positioning, deal structuring and onsite end user consultation. In addition, the ArrowBEST team will help solution providers successfully navigate IBM's sales programs and promotions. "We're enthusiastic about IBM's blade technology. And with ArrowBEST, we're ensuring that resellers who move into this space get the training and technical support they need to meet customer demand," said Eric Williams, executive vice president, Support Net Division. During May Days, the team will demonstrate an IBM eServer BladeCenter and answer questions from the hundreds of IBM Business Partners expected to attend. Blade servers are hot-swappable servers that fit into a single eServer BladeCenter chassis. While each blade server is an independent device with its own processors, memory, storage, network controllers, operating system and applications, each server in an eServer BladeCenter shares power, fans, floppy drives, switches and ports with other blade servers through a mid- or backplane. Adding computing power or changing configurations simply requires sliding the servers in and out of an open bay in the eServer BladeCenter chassis.
