Arriva: No bus price war with Mersey rival.

MERSEYSIDE bus operator Arriva said yesterday that it has no intention of starting a "price war" with rival bus group Stagecoach stagecoach, heavy, closed vehicle on wheels, usually drawn by horses, formerly used to transport passengers and goods overland. Arriva, which runs more than 60% of Merseyside's buses and is the biggest operator of London's double-decker red buses, improved its UK bus operating profits by pounds 1m to pounds 30m, despite a pounds 3m hike in fuel costs.

Publishing trading results for the six months to the end of June, Arriva said cost controls and improved revenues - including fare rises - had helped boost profits.

In February, Mr Hind pledged to invest pounds 45m on 400 new buses for Merseyside - pounds 20m towards a new fleet of low-floor buses for Liverpool by 2008 and a further pounds 25m for new buses covering the rest of Merseyside by 2011. The investment is on top of pounds 40m spent by Arriva on its Merseyside operation in the five years since buying former Merseyside bus operator MTL MTL

But Mr Hind added that he wanted local councils to create more bus lanes to ensure speedy access for public transport to persuade more commuters to leave their cars at home.

Arriva's performance in the UK was accompanied by continued strong growth in mainland Europe, where operating profits rose 44% and enabled the group to keep overall half-year profits close to the level of last year.
