Arrest in Halloween killing of NY guard

An 18-year-old has been charged with murder in the Halloween shooting death of a security man who confronted egg-throwing vandals outside the building he was guarding, police said Monday.

Nyanda Charley was arrested Saturday night and faces charges of second-degree murder and weapons possession, Commissioner David Chong said. Police were flooded with tips after Wednesday night's shooting of security guard Neville Webb, the commissioner said.

Webb, a 52-year-old Jamaican immigrant, approached a group of teens who were tossing eggs at people and cars outside the building where he worked in Mount Vernon, just north of New York City. He was shot in the head and chest and died the next night.

The commissioner said police were confident "we have the one person who shot Mr. Webb," but added that the investigation is continuing.

Webb's son, Christopher Webb, said it was difficult for the family to keep from being angry, but added, "I ask that this young man and his family do not get tried in public opinion."

He said his father's organs had been donated "to nine different parties to save nine different lives."

"If this man gave his life to protect the job that he so cherished, even in death he will still help others to move on and be among their families," Webb said.

Before coming to the United States in 2005, Neville Webb had spent a quarter-century as a prison guard in Jamaica and had a reputation there for fairness that allowed him to walk through the island's worst ghettoes, his son said last week.
