ArrayComm and CommWorks Partner to Deliver Standards-Based Mobile Broadband; CommWorks Joins Australian Consortium to Deploy the i-BURST Personal Broadband System.Business Editors/High-Tech Writers SAN JOSE, Calif. & ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 12, 2002 ArrayComm, Inc. and CommWorks, a 3Com Company (Nasdaq:COMS), today announced an agreement to provide standards-based Internet connectivity and seamless mobility in ArrayComm's i-BURST(TM) Personal Broadband System. ArrayComm has demonstrated seamless compatibility with CommWorks' Total Control(R) 1000 Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN PDSN - Packet Data Serving Node (Nortel Networks)), the market leading PDSN. CommWorks has also joined the CKW CKW - Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke (Switzerland) CKW - Closed Key Walkaway (call centers) Wireless consortium in Australia that will begin the first i-BURST system rollout this month. The integrated Personal Broadband solution from ArrayComm and CommWorks enables a lucrative business model for wireless operators worldwide and facilitates fast rollout of standards-based IP broadband services. The i-BURST Personal Broadband System is a wide area wireless data network designed to provide people with high-speed Internet access wherever they are. With PDSNs in an i-BURST network, consumers can move throughout a city or service area while maintaining a 1 Mbps Internet connection, much like they maintain cellular voice calls while in transit today. In addition to enabling "handoff" between i-BURST access points, PDSNs serve as a gateway for Internet access, billing, virtual private networking and other network features. "Our alliance with CommWorks is a critical element in the commercial deployment of the i-BURST system," said Nitin J. Shah, chief strategy officer for ArrayComm. "The i-BURST system is not just an efficient radio access system, but a compete network architecture and services platform. Integration of the CommWorks network element proves the system's IP standards-based approach and helps complete a robust network design that is ready for commercial 'prime time.' We are delighted that CommWorks has expanded its portfolio to encompass both the conventional mobile systems and this new generation of i-BURST wireless Internet infrastructure." In addition to its technology collaboration with ArrayComm, CommWorks has joined a consortium in Australia led by CKW Wireless, ArrayComm's Australian subsidiary. The consortium also includes carrier Vodafone Australia, leading Australian ISP OzEmail, telecommunications project manager Total Communications Infrastructure (TCI) and base station site owner Crown Castle Australia. The consortium was formed in June 2002 to deliver the pre-commercial deployment of i-BURST in Australia. The project will begin this month in Sydney. CommWorks' contribution includes both equipment and services. CommWorks has extensive experience in designing and deploying high-availability carrier grade wireless data networks, which it has gained through deploying code division multiple access (CDMA) networks in 16 countries on five continents. "The i-BURST Personal Broadband System is a pioneering technology that fundamentally alters the economics of delivering broadband," said Taher Behbehani, general manager, CommWorks Wireless Business. "This represents an exciting new market opportunity for our wireless PDSN product line, and we're eager to reach new customers around the world. We believe that many of our existing CDMA2000 customers will also embrace the i-BURST system as a complement to their existing voice and wireless data strategies. Consumers are growing in their need for mobility and broadband access with whatever they do, and we're proud to help deliver it." Building on the Australian phase one rollout, ArrayComm and CommWorks plan to enter other i-BURST markets as the system is deployed worldwide. The companies will also explore extending the technology collaboration to CommWorks' other product lines such as Voice over IP (VoIP) in future months. About the i-BURST Personal Broadband System The i-BURST Personal Broadband System is a carrier-grade wide area wireless data network designed for people to have high-speed Internet access wherever they are. Distinct and complementary to traditional 2G and emerging 3G systems as well as short-range 802.11 WLAN (Wi-Fi) networks, Personal Broadband technology delivers a revolutionary Internet experience, combining the freedom of mobility, low cost infrastructure and transmission speeds similar to a typical home broadband DSL or cable line. The pure IP, end-to-end system is designed much like a cellular system, with base stations deployed throughout a coverage area and wireless modems or PC cards used by consumers to access the service. The system is architected to support the full range of IP applications in a mobile environment, including e-mail, virtual private networking, high speed Web access, streaming video, gaming and voice over IP (VoIP). ArrayComm's patented adaptive antenna technology is at the heart of the system, providing incredible gains in spectral efficiency and thereby dramatically lowering per-user service costs on a network. About ArrayComm ArrayComm, Inc. is the world leader in smart antenna technology. ArrayComm's patented IntelliCell(R) technology -- based on fully adaptive smart antennas -- creates dedicated personal cells of voice or data for wireless subscribers. ArrayComm licenses IntelliCell technology to manufacturers and improves the cost, coverage and capacity of any personal communications system. It is installed in more than 125,000 IntelliCell-equipped base stations worldwide, serving more than 10 million people. IntelliCell technology is also the key ingredient of ArrayComm's innovative i-BURST(TM) Personal Broadband System -- the only wireless Internet access system that offers the freedom of mobility with the high speed of DSL at consumer pricing. ArrayComm was founded in 1992, and wireless industry pioneer Martin Cooper is chairman and CEO. The company has more than 250 patents issued or pending worldwide.
