Around the North forestry.

Government reaches out for investment

Ontario's value-added forest economy is taking shape with a new provincial plan to attract private investment through forest slash.

The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR MNR Ministry of Natural Resources

MNR Mouvement National Républicain (French: National Republican Movement)
) is asking for companies to outline their ideas to create 'green jobs' by making use of unused Crown tree tops and limbs.

A request for expressions of interest will be open until March 3.

In a Jan. 20 MNR release, the results of the expression of interest will also help the ministry determine the wood volume for the next steps in a process

After a review of the companies' submissions, the ministry will determine "appropriate next steps, which may include a wood supply competitive process."

The provincial government envisions forest biofibre being used to produce wood pellets Wood pellets are a type of wood fuel, generally made from compacted sawdust. They are usually produced as a byproduct of sawmilling and other wood transformation activities.  to generate electricity.

"Ontario companies are among the most innovative in the world," said Natural Resources Minister Donna Cansfield Donna H. "I know they will respond to this challenge with new, exciting ideas that will benefit the forest sector and the communities that depend on it."

The McGuinty government has pledged to stop burning coal to generate electricity by 2014 and want more alternative fuels to reduce the province's dependence on fossil fuels.

Ontario Power Generation Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is a public company whose shares are wholly owned by the Government of Ontario.
