 would seem to be a study in contrasts: one is straight, one is gay, one is Norwegian and taller, one is American and shorter. But their similarities unite them in an unquenchable need to explore, to live at the edge and to transverse To cross from side to side.  Antarctica. This drive is akin to religious zeal Zeal

. As Arnesen puts it: "Putting that feeling into words in impossible. I know that some of my drive comes from the inspiration I find in nature...The feeling is similar to the one I have heard religious people describe. It's a reverence that makes everything else make sense. When I am in the wilderness, I know why I am here, what life is about, who I am." (p.20) Starting November 13, 2000, Arnesen and Bancroft spent the following 97 days trying to be the first women to cross the entire continent of Antarctica, using skis and "sails." Unlike previous explorers, the high-tech world could assist them and bring them back to a different reality. (Once, while on hold with a phone call, they listened to muzak from thousands of miles away.) However, such contact and easy access to rescue did not prevent them from the immediate dangers of whiteout, injuries, frostbite frostbite (chilblains), injury to the tissue caused by exposure to cold, usually affecting the extremities of the body, such as the hands, feet, ears, or nose. Extreme cold causes the small blood vessels in the extremities to constrict.  and unseen crevices. One moment of stillness and beauty could quickly turn into a moment of complete terror.

Using the first person, Arnesen and Bancroft alternate short chapters, with a third-person "fill-in" voice representing those who waited for them. It is a casual yet effective style, complete with flashbacks and different points of view on what happened. Both speak movingly of the schoolchildren schoolchildren school nplécoliers mpl;
