Joshua Smith of Eugene joined the Army to "get the mental and physical training he thought he needed to go further in life," says his mother, Diana Jean Haertle.

He also wanted college benefits to pursue a career in law enforcement, possibly criminal law. He was considering college in Phoenix, but after spending so much time in the desert, he isn't so sure.
