Army of volunteers swings into action for commercialbank Qatar masters
As golfing superstars Adam Scott, Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson prepare to take on the challenge of Doha Golf Club, an army of 300 volunteers will be on hand to ensure everything goes according to plan in the 2009 Commercialbank Qatar Masters, presented by Dolphin Energy.
Under the ever-attentive gaze of Danish-born Helle Borsting, these golf-loving volunteers will work around the clock tackling a variety of tasks with near-military precision as Doha welcomes the players, officials and media from the booming PGA European Tour.
"There is a lot of work involved as we plan for several months in advance," says 45 year-old Borsting, Head of Volunteers with five consecutive tournaments behind her and a Doha resident for the past fifteen years.
"During the tournament, I use volunteers as marshals, walking scorers, on-course score board workers, media centre assistants, caddies and driving range assistants. The volunteers are of a variety of nationalities living in Qatar, while some even fly in just to help during the tournament."
Organised by the Qatar Golf Association (QGA) in collaboration with the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) and Commercialbank, the 2009 Commercialbank Qatar Masters, presented by Dolphin Energy will be staged from January 22-25. For the hard-working volunteers, it will be the business end after months of preparation.
"Ability and availability are the key attributes but there is a lot to do behind the scenes," adds Borsting. "I keep e-mail and phone contact with the volunteers throughout the year, review the applications and choose the participants.
"Once we have them in place, I'll make up the working schedule for each one, arrange clothing and schedules, manage the information meeting, be on call at the volunteers' cabin throughout the event and be the first to arrive in the morning and the last to leave in the evening."
Despite the long hours and hard work, there is a great feeling of camaraderie among the volunteers, some of whom take time out of their day-to-day jobs with title sponsors Commercialbank and whose work is appreciated by everyone involved from tee to green.
"Many of the volunteers receive compliments from the players and the caddies for their volunteer work, while it's nice that Doha Golf Club, event organisers and the European Tour express appreciation for what we do."
Although Borsting admits she sees no actual play during the tournament despite spending many hours at the club, the volunteers' chief admits the work is very rewarding.
"Yes, of course it's a lot of work for several months and an around-the-clock job while the tournament is on, but after so many years I know most of the volunteers personally and they're all very happy to volunteer. Judging by their many e-mails they love helping out at such a well-organised event."
