General RK Karwal said here today that the government is considering a proposal to raise intake of cadets from the National Cadet Corps (NCC) into the prestigious Indian Military Academy (IMA) from 64 to 80. Alarmed over the shortfall of officers, the government is also likely to hike the intake of NCC "C" certificate holders into the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, from 79 to 100, he added. Addressing a news conference coinciding with the NCC Republic Day Camp, Lt General Karwal said since 2007 the NCC is working on a programme to raise the enrolment of cadets, a majority of them would be girls. The strength of the NCC would go up from the present 13 lakhs to 15 lakhs in five years, he added. He is a former chairman of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM).[1] He is also an academician, a career diplomat, and a former Vice-Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University. would inaugurate the annual NCC Republic Day Camp on January 8. There are 1,950 cadets participating in the month-long camp. Four bands would be participating in the camp.
