When the father is taken away for stealing a ham, the oldest son must help the family survive. Those are the bare facts of the story, simply told--so much so that the dog is the only character with a name. But the power of the narrative cannot be denied, and Brooks magnifies it with his expressive and at times heartbreaking heart·break·ing
