Armour convoy on way.

HUNDREDS of heavily armoured vehicles are on their way to Afghanistan, defence chiefs said yesterday.

But there will still not be enough for the UK force.

New vehicles - including the heavily armoured Cougar cougar: see puma.

Plus - to serve 8100 troops will be in place by next spring.

But the UK has about 9000 troops in the country at the moment and speculation is rife that this could soon increase to 10,000.

Yesterday, Brigadier Gordon Messenger, commanding officer of 3 Commando Brigade, said: "You'll never get someone saying they've got everything they want.

"Part and parcel of the job is making the best of the resources that are available."

The UK has spent pounds 1.25billion on new vehicles and improving existing vehicles since 2006 .
