Armies may be heading north; MILITARY: Two regiments set for merger could also relocate.

Byline: By Jonathan Walker Jonathan Walker (born 1799 in Cape Cod, Massachusetts - died May 1, 1878 near Muskegon, Michigan), aka "The Man with the Branded Hand," was an American reformer who became a national hero in 1844 when he was tried and sentenced as a slave stealer following his attempt to help seven  POLITICAL EDITOR

TWO historic Midland regiments which are set to merge may also be relocated to Yorkshire, the Minister of Defence has admitted.

The Staffordshire Regiment The Staffordshire Regiment (Prince of Wales') (or simply "Staffords" for short) was an infantry regiment of the British Army, part of the Prince of Wales' Division. The regiment was formed in 1959 by the amalgamation of The South Staffordshire Regiment and The North Staffordshire  and Worcester and Sherwood Foresters, known as the Woofers, are likely to move to Catterick, north Yorkshire.

The Ministry of Defence announced plans in 2004 to merge the two regiments with the Cheshire Regiment to create a new Mercian Regiment.

Their names are set to live on, as they will become the 3rd Battalion Mercian Regiment (Staffords) and the 2nd Battalion, Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters).

But it has emerged that the units, which are both manned by Brummies, are unlikely to be based in the Midlands. Instead, they are expected to move to Catterick Garrison, an army base in north Yorkshire.

Ministers were asked about reports the Mercian Regiment would be moved to the north of England in the House of Commons House of Commons: see Parliament.  by Mid-Worcestershire Tory MP Peter Luff luff

"It is too early to speculate on what the outcomes of this review will be, but it is anticipated that a final decision will be announced by the spring."

The Mercians will be made up of three battalions of about 550 men each from the Cheshires, the Staffordshire Regiment and Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters.

The Ministry of Defence has announced plans to expand Catterick Garrison, which currently has a population of around 12,000 service personnel, to more than 25,000 by 2020.
