Armed and ready; Millbury senior Bucky Richards is one of a handful of outstanding quarterbacks in Division 2.

Byline: Jim Wilson There are a number of notable people named Jim Wilson. These include:

  • Jim Wilson (baseball), a baseball player

teammates. The lost player was Bucky Richards, and while neither one knew it at the time, it was the start of a beautiful partnership on that field.

Fast forward a decade and Richards has morphed from that panicked Pop Warner lineman into one of the top high school quarterbacks in Central Mass. Richards took over as Millbury's quarterback in his sophomore year and finished second in passing with 1,518 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Last year, he was even better, throwing for a Central Mass-best 2,186 yards and 20 touchdowns. Richards said most of his success can be credited to Palazzi - one of the more prolific passers to come out of the area, with successful stints at Leominster High, UMass and the semipro sem·i·pro

"We know we're capable of doing it because we have a lot of talent back and a few starters," Richards said. "We should be able to repeat, we just have to play good enough. If we play our game, that's what it's all about."

Richards is one of a handful of outstanding quarterbacks in Division 2. Northbridge's Zach Zidelis, Bartlett's Jesse Bond and Southbridge's Tyler Ramsey are among the top passers in Division 2 West, while Leicester's Dominic Mazzone and Auburn's Jon Leroux are threats in Richards' own division.

Richards said having such tough competition has motivated him to work harder to get even better as a senior.

"It's an honor to be mentioned with them because they're all good athletes in other sports, like Ramsey in baseball and Zidelis in basketball," said Richards, himself no slouch slouch

"I was thinking all summer about what Zidelis and Ramsey and all those guys were doing," Richards said. "Are they working as hard as I am? Should I be working harder? It just pushes you all summer until you play them, then you find out."

Zach Zidelis

Northbridge High

Richards may have won last year's Central Mass. passing title, but Zidelis had something even better - a Division 2 Super Bowl win. The Rams got past Richards and the Woolies in last year's playoffs and Zidelis, who passed for 2,058 yards and 17 touchdowns, is looking to add to the Northbridge trophy case this year.

Mike Vulcano

A member of the highly touted senior class at Algonquin, Vulcano passed for 934 yards and eight touchdowns for the Tomahawks last year. He should flourish under new coach Bill Long as Algonquin will contend in a wide-open Division 1 East.

Corey Lavallee

Tantasqua Regional

Lavallee passed for 845 yards and 10 touchdowns as a junior last year as the Warriors finished 6-5. Look for Lavallee to continue to help build Tantasqua into a perennial contender.

Shane Keddy

Worcester Tech

Injuries to most of the front seven limited the Eagles to just three wins last year, but with one of the best athletes in Central Mass. under center, Worcester Tech should improve as Keddy still passed for 829 yards and eight scores.

Brendan Casey

Milford High

Casey passed for over 800 yards as a junior last year and should have the Scarlet Hawks in the postseason mix this fall as a senior.

Dominic Mazzone

Leicester High

Mazzone passed for 813 yards and eight touchdowns last year and is one of many returning starters who should have the Wolverines battling for a postseason berth this year.

Jason Silbor

Uxbridge High

Silbor passed for 712 yards and five touchdowns as a sophomore last year and should improve thanks to more experienced players around him.

Steve Ciarmitaro

Narragansett Regional

Under new head coach John Beary, Ciarmitaro will only get better, as he threw for 629 yards and nine touchdowns last year for the Warriors.

Glen Spellman

Murdock High

Spellman is back under center for Murdock and the co-captain should improve on his 571 passing yards and five touchdowns.

A four-year starter, Leroux is one of the better athletes in Central Mass. and can take over a game if asked. He passed for 458 yards and three touchdowns last year and should help the Rockets compete for a playoff spot this year.

Tyler Craft

Gardner High

Craft passed for over 400 yards as a junior and was named to the Division 1 West all-star team as a defensive back. He will be a big factor in the Wildcats' playoff push as a senior.
