A new generation of AGLs: within only a few decades the Automatic Grenade Launcher (AGL) has leapt from the concept stage to becoming a widely accepted and valued infantry support weapon, providing the foot soldier with a highly effective area fire suppression system. Gander, Terry J 3152

Battlefield training systems: it is not so long ago that battlefield training was conducted over dedicated ranges such as Salisbury Plain in Britain or Sennelager in Germany, while week long exercises could involve other rural locations. Vehicles and helicopters marked with white crosses would carry umpires through Blue and Red forces to deliver thunder flashes and declare deaths and injuries. (Training & Simulation). Walters, Brian 3211

Bodenseewerk Geratetechnik. (News). 46
Bolt from a more distant blue: between the two extremes of low-cost guided bombs (see Armada 1/2002) and expensive long-range cruise missiles (3/2001) there exists a need for cost-effective tactical air-to-ground guided weapons that can deliver suitable warheads precisely and from a safe distance against high-value, hardened, mobile or multiple targets by day and night and under all weather conditions. (Airborne Warfare). Gander, Terry J 3895
Born out of necessity; Israel's defence industry is somewhat unique in that its development did not benefit from a long historical process, unlike that of other countries. Indeed its roots cannot be found in traditional age-old arsenals or shipyards. In fact one can say that it was born with the nation, in 1948. (Defence Industry Report). Biass, Eric H. 3119

Helisim, the way to go to school; our What's Up feature in this issue looks at a helicopter system that is not intended to go up anywhere except in business terms. With a strong collective thrust from Eurocopter, Thales and Defence Conseil International the new Helisim company of Marignane in southern France was born almost with a silver spoon on 21 February 2002. Land-based Vshorad and Shorad systems; the protection of high-value ground targets against attacks by fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft and cruise missiles demands an integrated, multi-layer air defence system. Braybrook, Roy 8248

Mission preparation -- the ultimate in simulation? All training, in whatever form, is designed to prepare personnel and their commanders to fight efficiently. Nevertheless, the careers of many in the armed forces will be such that they will reach retirement age without ever being on the receiving end of shots fired in anger. This is as it should be, since war is only conducted when diplomacy has failed. (Simulation Approach). Walters, Brian 988

Travelling under armour; mechanised infantry have become used to being carted around in armoured personnel carriers (APCs). Although they are little more than capacious armoured boxes on wheels or tracks, APCs can provide their occupants with a fair degree of protection against many battlefield hazards, from bullets to land mines, but to do this they are usually heavy, complex beasts, very often sporting some degree of firepower. (Ground Warfare). Gander, Terry J 3391
