Arkipelag, Stockholm.


Stockholm is this year's recipient of the roving title "Cultural Capital of Europe" - one of the initiatives/advantages of fin de siecle Fin` de sie´cle

1. Lit., end of the century; - mostly used adjectively in English to signify: belonging to, or characteristic of, the close of the 19th century.
 economic cooperation in Europe. Organizers in Stockholm have foregone a mega-show approach in favour of small, tightly focused and discrete presentations that, it is hoped, will together convey the big picture of contemporary art.

Over the course of the year, seven of the city's museums will present a total of 40 visual art exhibitions in five exhibition slots under the collective title ARKIPELAG.

First up and running through February: "The King is not the Queen," curated by Francesco Bonami, at the Nordiska Museet with artists including Eija-Lisa Ahtila, Simonetta Fadda, Cecilia Parsberg, Pipilotti Rist Elisabeth Charlotte Rist (born in 1962 in Grabs, Sankt Gallen, Switzerland) is a well-known video artist. She lives and now lives and works in Zurich and Los Angeles. Biography

A high profile roster of curators has been invited to contribute to exhibitions throughout the year, including Daniel Birnbaum (Sweden), Francesco Bonami (Italy), Lynne Cooke (USA), Hans Ulrich Obrist Hans Ulrich Obrist (Zurich, Switzerland, 1968) is a Swiss curator and art critic. In 1993, he founded the Museum Robert Walser and began to run the Migrateurs program at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris where he served as a curator for contemporary art.  (Switzerland) and Jerome Sans (France).

The artists in ARKIPELAG span the globe, though special emphasis has been given to the work of Nordic artists, including Lena Cronqvist, Lova Hamilton, Henrik Plenge-Jakobsen and Sophie Tottie. Among them, four artists - Ronald Jones (USA), Matts Leiderstam (Sweden), Collier Schorr (USA) and Hakan Rhenberg (Sweden) - have been invited to create exhibitions based on some particular aspect of Nordic culture.
