Arkansas companies make Forbes list. (Inside Business).


Four Arkansas-based public companies are listed among Forbes magazine's Platinum List, which measures companies with more than $1 billion in revenue by long- and short-term Short-term

Any investments with a maturity of one year or less.

In the telecommunications category, Alltel had the third-highest five-year average return on capital at 15.2 percent. SBC (1) (SBC Communications Inc., San Antonio, TX, www.sbc.com) A large, national telecommunications company that grew from a multitude of local and regional companies, including Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell and Nevada Bell, into a single, unified brand by 2002.  Communications had 16.5 percent, and Scientific-Atlanta had 16.4 percent. Alltel also posted five-year average sales growth of 13.5 percent and five-year average earnings per share growth of 27 percent.

 Best posted five-year average return on capital of 12.9 percent. Arkansas Best also posted five-year average earnings per share growth of 36.8 percent. Five-year average sales growth was 'deemed not meaningful by the magazine.

J.B. Hunt, in the same category as Arkansas Best, posted five-year average return on capital of 10.5 percent. J.B. Hunt also posted five-year average sales growth of 8.4 percent and five-year average earnings per share growth of 16.9 percent.

In the retail category, Wal-Mart saw five-year average return on capital of 16.3 percent. Wal-Mart also posted five-year average sales growth of 16.3 percent and five-year average earnings per share growth of 18.6 percent.
