Arkansas Gov. Huckabee says too many are 'spiritually disconnected'.

Addressing a large Religious Right gathering in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas claimed that too many Americans are spiritually lacking.

A keynote speaker at TV preacher D. James Kennedy's two-day "Reclaiming America for Christ" conference, Huckabee said, "There are many Americans who are spiritually disconnected, culturally lost."

Mentioning a decades-old MTV program, he added, "Most of us in this room truly believe that America was better off when it was more about 'Leave it to Beaver' than 'Beavis and Butthead.'"

Kennedy's Coral Ridge Ministries has been conducting the "Reclaiming America for Christ" conferences for many years now. The gatherings rally evangelical Christian voters to the polls. According to The Miami Herald, this year's conference, the 10th. drew close to 700 participants.

Kennedy told the crowd that America can and will soon be ruled by Religious Right values.

"I'm telling you, America is going to be changed," Kennedy declared on the conference's opening day.

The speakers at the conference argued that the nation was founded on their Christian values and that popular culture has eroded those values and endangered the nation. They railed against reproductive rights, liberal media, Hollywood and the so-called "homosexual agenda" and called for organized prayer in the public schools.

Huckabee spoke during the conference's awards dinner and urged the attendees to get actively involved in the political process.

"Everyone wants a clean plate" said Huckabee, "but somebody's got to wash the dishes. We want to get people to roll up their sleeves."

U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris (R-Fla.) also made an appearance at the conference.

The Herald reported that during her speech, Harris praised Francis Schaeffer, a theologian who inspired the Religious Right movement. Harris said it was a turning point in her life when she studied under Schaeffer.

The Palm Beach Post reported that Harris told the conferees that she had "redirected my life to the Lord when I was only in the third grade" and that she was "blessed to be raised in a godly family."

"Everything is possible with God," said Harris.
