Arizona dumps UO volleyball team in five games.

TUCSON, Ariz. - Oregon missed a chance to solidify its hold on fifth place in the Pac-10 volleyball standings Thursday by falling in five games to Arizona.

The Wildcats (11-15 overall, 2-12 Pac-10) were one game away from a loss, but rallied in the fourth and fifth games for a 29-31, 30-25, 26-30, 30-23, 15-8 victory over the Ducks (17-6, 7-6).

Oregon, which lost its second consecutive match, is a half-game ahead of sixth-place California in the conference standings.

Whitney Dosty had 29 kills, and Randy Goodenough and Brooke Buringrud added 15 apiece for Arizona. Sonja Newcombe had 20 kills and Erin Little had 15 for Oregon.

Oregon women announce

two basketball signings

The two new signees joined Tatianna Thomas in the current class, which is ranked No. 31 nationally by Blue Star Basketball. The Ducks are also expected to sign Australian post Ellie Manou during the fall signing period.

Lane cross country teams

The men's 8,000-meter race begins at 11 a.m., and the women's 5,000-meter race starts at noon.

The Titan men are led by individual favorite Jordan McNamara, John Figueiredo and Joe Churchill as they attempt to break Spokane's four-year grip on the NWAACC championship trophy.

On the women's side, Lane is paced by former Churchill standout Toma Starodubtseva, ex-Pleasant Hill star Danica Bates Bates   , Katherine Lee 1859-1929.

to speak on Monday

Kelly Holmes, a two-time Olympic champion from Great Britain, will speak at the Eugene Running Company on Monday at 7 p.m. The event is free to the public.

Holmes captured gold medals in both the 800 and 1,500 meters at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. She also won a bronze medal in the 800 at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

Holmes retired from competition in 2005. She was once coached by Eugene's Margo Jennings, who also tutored Olympic champion Maria Mutola, who lived and trained in the Eugene-Springfield area.

Oregon State accepting

Operation Santa donations

CORVALLIS - The Operation Santa project, which is being led by Oregon State men's basketball senior center Kyle Jeffers, needs donations and will be collecting items at Saturday's 7:15 p.m. game between OSU and Southeastern Louisiana at Gill Coliseum.

Operation Santa is a project that will be sending care packages for the holidays to Marines stationed in Iraq.

Oregon beats Wyoming

in wrestling opener

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Oregon opened its wrestling regular season Thursday with a 19-17 nonleague victory over Wyoming.

Beau Malia (125), Justin Pearch (141), Kyle Bounds (157), Brian Cantrell (165) and Tony Rolen (184) won decisions for the Ducks.
