 its Argos catalogue chain and business services group Experian, it said today.

Both will be independently listed on the stock exchange within the next year, subject to shareholder approval, said a company statement.

In a move that mirrors the previous hiving off of its popular Burberry fashion line, the demerger will allow existing stakeholders to continue to benefit from their investments in both businesses.

But bosses also plan to issue up to 15% of new shares in Experian at the time of the demerger. Management at both firms will remain in place.

 chairman Sir Victor Blank said today: "The separation is the final step in focusing GUS on fewer activities, a strategy that has delivered substantial value for shareholders."

Both divisions were well positioned with proven management teams.

The group is paying a special contribution of pounds 100m into its two defined benefit pension schemes, after a pounds 76m payment a year ago.
