Argos abandons trial.

THE owner of catalogue retailer Argos has abandoned efforts to develop the brand in India India, officially Republic of India, republic (2005 est pop. 1,080,264,000), 1,261,810 sq mi (3,268,090 sq km), S Asia. The second most populous country in the world, it is also sometimes called Bharat, its ancient name. India's land frontier (c.  - its first big move outside Europe Europe (yr`əp), 6th largest continent, c.4,000,000 sq mi (10,360,000 sq km) including adjacent islands (1992 est. pop. 512,000,000). .

Home Retail Group said a trial run of its franchising venture had not performed as planned to support the investment needed in the current Indian economic climate.

Argos said the existing retail operation would now be wound down at "minimal cost" to the group.

But it said the Indian retail market may still present an "attractive long-term growth opportunity" for Argos.

Argos, with Huddersfield stores at the Pack Horse Centre, Victoria Lane and Leeds Road Leeds Road may refer to:
  • Leeds Road Stadium, former home ground of Huddersfield Town F.C. from 1908 to 1994 and former home ground of Huddersfield Giants rugby league club from 1992-1994
 Retail Park, said the decision to end the trial was made by the group and its two Indian partners in the venture.
