Argentina denounces British claims to Falklands


Argentina has angrily rejected British moves to extend its rights over the seabed off the coast of the Falkland Islands Falkland Islands (fôk`lənd), Span. Islas Malvinas, officially Colony of the Falkland Islands, group of islands (2005 est. pop. 3,000), 4,618 sq mi (11,961 sq km), S Atlantic, c.300 mi (480 km) E of the Strait of Magellan. , which the two countries fought a war over in the 1980s.

Argentina's foreign minister said the British claim -- submitted to the United Nations to extend the limits of the continental shelf off the islands people here call the Malvinas -- was "unacceptable."

"The British insistence in assuming extended competence over the Malvinas, South Georgia South Georgia, island, c.1,450 sq mi (3,760 sq km), S Atlantic Ocean, c.1,200 mi (1,930 km) E of Cape Horn. A dependency of the Falkland Islands from 1908 to 1985 (along with the South Sandwich Islands, a group of nine small, volcanic islets c.  and Southern Sandwich Islands and their surrounding maritime areas is unacceptable and inadmissible That which, according to established legal principles, cannot be received into evidence at a trial for consideration by the jury or judge in reaching a determination of the action. ," Jorge Taiana said.

"Such competences only correspond to the sovereign state SOVEREIGN STATE. One which governs itself independently of any foreign power. : the Republic of Argentina."

The British submission, which would allow it to exploit natural resources in the relevant areas, relates to the ocean floor around the Falklands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) is a British overseas territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean. It is a remote and inhospitable collection of islands, consisting of South Georgia – which measures approximately 106. .

Under international law, states have jurisdiction over the seabed up to 200 nautical miles off their coasts but this can be extended up to 350 nautical miles through application to the UN commission.
