Area launches platform for quad-processor 64GB server with built-in six terabyte raid storage.

At the LinuxWorld Expo in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden , Area Electronics Systems, Inc. has announced its most powerful server platform to date. Designed for enterprise-critical database, high-performance computing High-speed computing, which typically refers to supercomputers used in scientific research. , and high-definition video rendering applications, the new platform can accommodate unusually high levels of memory, disk capacity, and I/ O speed to complement up to four single- or dual-core processors.

Named the Areasys 3400, the new 3U rack-mount product is based on AMD (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, www.amd.com) A major manufacturer of semiconductor devices including x86-compatible CPUs, embedded processors, flash memories, programmable logic devices and networking chips.  Opteron Series 800 64-bit processors incorporating Direct Connect Architecture, which eliminates front-side buses to improve I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

and optimize memory performance. The dual-core versions of the processors reduce power requirements and improve performance when running multiple applications simultaneously.

Up to four PCI Express X8 channels and four 1Gbps Ethernet links are supported through dual ServerWorks Hyper Transport 2000 chipsets, which together provide up to 4GB of bidirectional The ability to move, transfer or transmit in both directions.  I/O.

The quad processors can be backed with up to 64GB of double-data rate error-correcting memory, and the front face of the Areasys 3400 offers twelve 3.5 inch bays for hot-swappable SATA (Serial ATA) A serial version of the ATA (IDE) interface, which has been the de facto standard hard disk interface for desktop PCs for more than two decades. The original Parallel ATA (PATA) interface was launched in 1986.  disks--for a total capacity of up to six terabytes (6,000 gigabytes) of RAID array storage using today's maximum 500GB drives.

The system is powered by two 700 watt supplies with a third hot spare. Ten hot-swappable fans keep it all cool.

"The Areasys 3400 platform lets integrators assemble enormous computing power and storage in a single-box," said William Huang, Area's president, "and we think it's a bargain at $3,995. We expect to begin deliveries in mid-September."

The Areasys 3400 platform is base-priced at $3,995 without processors, memory, or hard drives, and with a 4-drive on-board RAID controller, for sales to integrators and resellers.
