Are you done with the paper yet, dear? (Senior Division). The purpose of this project is to design and construct a durable, effective beam which can be used for construction. This type of beam will be made from recycled materials such as newspaper. I hypothesized that I can design and construct a beam equivalent in strength and purpose to conventional materials. This will reduce cost and the need for virgin woods. Blend shredded newspaper with water. Combine cornstarch cornstarch, material made by pulverizing the ground, dried residue of corn grains after preparatory soaking and the removal of the embryo and the outer covering. It is used as laundry starch, in sizing paper, in making adhesives, and in cooking. and water and cook to form a binding medium. Combine newspaper and binding medium in a blender. Squeeze mixture. Press into molds. Place molds into the oven and cook until dry. Test the beams for strength using a three point bending test and a four point bending test. Test using a torsion torsion, stress on a body when external forces tend to twist it about an axis. See strength of materials. , cantilever, shear, and compression test. I conclude that I was able to successfully design and construct a beam made from recycled newspaper which is equivalent in strength to virgin woods. After completing these test, I then compared the data to virgin woods. The modulus of elasticity of a material is a measure of its stiffness and for most materials remains constant over a range of stress. compared to Oak and Douglas Fir Douglas fir: see pine.
