The National Gold Medals for Parks and Recreation are open to all municipal park and recreation departments and park and recreation districts in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , as well as the 50-state park systems (odd-numbered years only). The purpose of these awards is to honor the nation's outstanding park and recreation agencies for excellence in the field of park and recreation management.

Finalists and winners are named in each of the following classes (according to the most recent census):

Class I: Population 250,000+

Class II: 100,000-250,000

Class III: 50,000-100,000

Class IV: 25,000-50,000

Class V: Less than 25,000

Deadlines for the awards are as follows:

Nomination Entry Forms--Due Jan. 14, 2005

Completed Applications--Due March 4, 2005

Notification of Finalists (by press release)--April 19, 2005

Finalists Judging Materials--Due June 24, 2005
