Dog kennels made of chain link can be found in abundance in most retail stores, pet stores and they can also be purchased through the net. However, the reason for their popularity is not because of their quality but due to the fact that their manufacturing process is easy and cheap. Retailers promote these kennels as they can purchase them for less and resell them to consumers for much higher profits.

In truth these chain link dog kennels are not the best choice for your pets. There are several reasons for this:

The linking process is made possible because the chain link is made of metal wires that are very soft. The soft wires are woven together to form links and the wires are crimped at their ends. Because they are soft these chain link kennels are not strong enough to contain large or aggressive dogs. Moreover, these soft wires can be easily chewed off or broken through by the larger and more aggressive breeds.

The next reason is that the crimped ends of the wires are very sharp and are rarely folded in properly, which leaves loose and sharp ends that are accidents waiting to happen. These sharp ends might cause serious injury if your pet gets tangled in them. Just to be sure, if you inspect a chain link kennel that has been used by a dog with medium to long hair, you are sure to find tufts of dog hair caught in between the weave of the wire. Every time a dog moves close to the wall of the kennel, the crimped edges trap their hair and a dog has to pull away to get untangled. This might lead to open sores and possible infection, which might lead to expensive trips to the vet.

But if you opt for chain link kennels then make sure that you inspect the wire mesh thoroughly for any jagged edges and see to it that the edges are finished with proper techniques before purchasing a dog kennel. The purpose of a dog kennel is to keep your pet safe and secure. Make sure that the kennel can provide that to your pet.
