Ardana plc, the emerging pharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development and marketing of innovative products to improve human reproductive health, is developing a broad portfolio for the treatment of a range of reproductive indications. Ardana's lead product, Teverelix LA, is in development for three initial indications: prostate cancer, BPH BPH abbr. benign prostatic hyperplasia BPH Benign prostatic hypertrophy, a very common noncancerous cause of prostatic enlargement in older men. and endometriosis. Teverelix LA has successfully completed two Phase II trials in prostate cancer. The progression of prostate cancer is usually driven by male sex hormones (androgens) such as testosterone. It is widely accepted that reducing levels of these hormones in advanced disease can help slow the growth of the cancer and prolong survival. The production of testosterone can be reduced either surgically, with the removal of the testicles Testicles Also called testes or gonads, they are part of the male reproductive system, and are located beneath the penis in the scrotum. Mentioned in: Testicular Cancer, Testicular Surgery, Vasectomy , or through drugs that affect production of testosterone. The Phase II studies have confirmed that Teverelix LA can attain and maintain suppression of testosterone to castration castration, removal of the sex glands of an animal, i.e., testes in the male, or ovaries and often the uterus in the female. Castration of the female animal is commonly referred to as spaying. levels in patients with advanced prostate cancer. Teverelix LA has also successfully completed a Phase II study in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia benign prostatic hyperplasia n. Abbr. BPH A nonmalignant enlargement of the prostate gland commonly occurring in men after the age of 50, and sometimes leading to compression of the urethra and obstruction of the flow of urine. . BPH is a common benign disease occurring in men over the age of 50, and increases in prevalence with age. BPH is characterised by an enlargement of the prostate gland, which results in urinary flow problems such as hesitancy, weak or interrupted stream, urgency and more frequent urination, especially at night. The growth of prostatic tissue is driven by male sex hormones, primarily testosterone and its more potent metabolite dihydrotestosterone dihydrotestosterone /di·hy·dro·tes·tos·te·rone/ (DHT) (-tes-tos´te-ron) an androgenic hormone formed in peripheral tissue by the action of 5 on testosterone; thought to be the androgen responsible for development of male primary sex (DHT). Reducing levels of these hormones can reduce the size and growth of the prostate. In clinical studies, Teverelix LA has been shown to decrease testosterone and subsequently DHT in a dose-dependent manner. Therefore, Teverelix LA can also reduce testosterone levels to the low end of the normal range, avoiding a chemical castration and its related symptoms. This makes it suitable for clinical development in benign as well as malignant indications. The company already has one product on the market, Striant(TM) SR, a testosterone-replacement therapy that has been launched by Ardana through its own sales force in the UK as a treatment for men with hypogonadism. Ardana has marketing and manufacturing rights in Europe for another product, Invicorp, an injectable combination of drug treatment for erectile dysfunction. Ardana completed its IPO on the London Stock Exchange London Stock Exchange London marketplace for securities. It was formed in 1773 by a group of stockbrokers who had been doing business informally in local coffeehouses. in March 2005, raising GBP 21 million and actively pursues product and technology in-licensing and outlicensing to maintain a robust pipeline.
