How would you like to cross the Arctic Ocean Arctic Ocean, the smallest ocean, c.5,400,000 sq mi (13,986,000 sq km), located entirely within the Arctic Circle and occupying the region around the North Pole.  in the middle of winter--on foot?

Ann Bancroft (born 29 September 1955 in Mendota Heights, Minnesota) is a United States author, teacher, and adventurer. She was the first woman to successfully finish a number of arduous expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic.
 and Liv Arnesen Liv Ragnheim Arnesen (born June 1, 1953 in Bærum, Norway) is a Norwegian cross-country skier, adventurer, guide, and motivational speaker. In 1994, she became the first woman to ski alone and unassisted to the South pole. The 1200km trek took fifty days. , plan to do. This month, they will set out from Arkticheskiy, Russia, to cross the Arctic Ocean, most of which is frozen in winter.

The two made history in 2001, when they became the first women to cross Antarctica on foot.

American Ann Bancroft and Norwegian Liv Arnesen are former schoolteachers who have always dreamed of crossing the Arctic. They will walk, ski, ski-sail, and, in some places, swim across the Arctic.

Their planned Arctic route (see map at right) is 1,240 miles long. On polar maps, the North or South Pole South Pole, southern end of the earth's axis, lat. 90° S. It is distinguished from the south magnetic pole. The South Pole was reached by Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer, in 1911. See Antarctica.  is always at the center.
