Arctic Monkeys live up to the buzz.

Byline: Serena Markstrom The Register-Guard

I admit a predisposition to liking anything involving monkeys, but the Arctic Monkeys Arctic Monkeys are an English indie rock band from High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. Formed in 2002, the band currently consists of Alex Turner on lead vocals and guitar, Jamie Cook on guitar, Matt Helders on drums and backing vocals, and Nick O'Malley on bass guitar, a position  would be impressive even if they had chosen to call themselves the Tropical Penguins.

The Monkeys' sophomore effort, "Favourite Worst Nightmare," is a fast-moving, confident jaunt through rock styles from a band that seemingly wouldn't care if it had spinach in its teeth.

The album title comes from a line in "D Is for Dangerous," track 3, and shows off young Monkeys songwriter Alex Turner's ability to craft clever lyrics. But it's the next song that first grabbed my attention. "Balaclava Balaclava

fought between Russians and British during Crimean War (1854). [Russ. Hist.: Harbottle Battles, 25–26]

See : Battle
" sounds like what might happen if a '60s garage surf band, a punk poet, spoken-word artist and jaded lover had to agree on a song and this was their harmonious result.

The British rock British rock and roll, or British rock, was born out of the influence of rock and roll and rhythm and blues from the United States, but added a new drive and urgency, exporting the music back and widening the audience for black R & B in the U.S.  band got its start when its members were barely out of high school. Now in their early 20s, the band has won the Mercury Prize, donated the money to charity and is nominated for the award again this year, according to according to

The Vipers

Today, Mac's

For a special 15-year anniversary show, the Vipers invited several musicians who have played with the local blues mainstay since its formation in 1992.

The regular lineup features founder Jon Silvermoon on harmonica harmonica.

Deb Cleveland has fronted the band as a vocalist since 2002. She toured Europe when the Vipers went there in 2004.

The Vipers are working on a new CD, with a planned release in spring 2008.

Tonight's show is at 9:30 p.m. at Mac's at the Vet's Club, 1926 Willamette St. The cover is $4.

Tickets are $12. The show starts at 9 p.m. today at 291 W. Eighth Ave.

Saturday, McDonald Theatre

Dark Star Orchestra has gained respect locally for its authentic re-creations of Grateful Dead shows, conjuring not just the right notes but the band's spirit.

Now, the tribute band has taken the good vibes one step further during its fall tour by raising funds for the Rex Foundation.

The act stops Saturday at the McDonald for a show that was originally scheduled for the Cuthbert. Weather doesn't change the fact that $1 from each ticket sold goes to the Rex Foundation, which helps support environmental, economic and educational causes, according to a news release.

The DSO See CSO.  Rex Caravan Tour also will feature an area for the Community Caravan, a fundraising campaign that encourages people to donate to the cause. Since 1984, the Rex Foundation has granted $8.2 million to more than 1,000 recipients, the release says.

Six years ago, the foundation became active again. Dark Star has supported the effort from the beginning, a news release says, performing at benefit shows.

The show starts at 8 p.m. Saturday at 1010 Willamette St. Tickets are $26 in advance or $31 on day of show.

The Whopner County Country All-Stars

Saturday, World Cafe

With the quote in the liner notes, "Saloon music was never meant to be taken seriously," you might assume the new release from the Whopner County Country All-Stars was no more than music for a good time in a country bar.

But that's not all. Although these steel-guitar-heavy tunes would be right at home sonically in a smoky bar, the wry lyrics would entertain the stay-at-home set, too.

That's because though the country sound is straightforward enough, some of the songs catch you by surprise with their blunt content. Take "Sorry Grandma," where youngsters confess to their grandmother they are rotten kids who maybe don't deserve the $20 they get for their birthdays and Christmas because of their alcohol and tobacco use.

The band really is made up of local all-stars. It features Sara Scofield, one of the leaders of the fledgling Emerald City Roller Girls league, on vocals. On drums is Evin Marshall, whose musical mark has been all over Eugene for years booking for local clubs and producing hip-hop and metal shows.

The release party for "Always a Pleasure" is at 6 p.m. Saturday at the World Cafe, 449 Blair Blvd. It is a free show.

Brooks Williams

Saturday, Luna

This town is big enough for two guitarists named Brooks, especially when their acts are so different.

Saturday at Luna, Brooks Williams, not to be confused with our high school-age guitar prodigy Brooks Robertson, will play starting at 8 p.m.

Williams is a veteran singer-songwriter based in Amherst, Mass. He was raised in Georgia and has been on the roots scene for years, playing his blues and folk ballads.

He has released 15 CDs to date, and his whole catalog is available on iTunes. His writing is featured in "Between the Strings: The Secret Lives of Guitars," a collection of essays by guitarists about their guitars.

The cover is $10, and Shannon Curtis opens. Luna is at 30 E. Broadway Ave.
