Atlantic Richfield Co. will launch one of the biggest media blitzes in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. The campaign, created by Century City ad firm Kresser/Craig, is scheduled to begin Sept. 3. It will consist of television spots featuring James Earl Jones and his "infamous voice of Darth Vader," according to an announcement by the ad agency.

Arco's TV blitz -- consisting of one 60-second comercial, three 30-second commercials and one 10-second spot -- will air on all three major networks and Fox every half hour during prime time.

Southern California newspapers will also be plastered with paid plaudits for Arco's EC-1. The black-and-white ads run four consecutive pages in length. The company also plans to run its four-page-long ads in full color in the Southern California regional issues of national magazines.

Mags slated for the blitz include Business Week, Fortune, Newsweek, Time, U.S. News & World Report U.S. News & World Report

Weekly newsmagazine published in Washington, D.C. U.S. News was founded in 1933 by David Lawrence (1888–1973) to cover important domestic events; he founded World Report in 1945 to treat world news. The two magazines were merged in 1948.

The advertising blitz is part of Arco's plan to stop selling leaded gasoline in its Southland service stations on Sept. 1, and to begin selling the cleaner-burning Emission Control gasoline, which will carry the brand name EC-1.

Arco has already received a flood of publicity about its new reformulated gasoline, including numerous articles in national newspapers and magazines and coverage on TV and radio news programs.

The switch to reformulated unleaded gasoline is widely seen by industry analysts as a move to prevent government officials from mandating alternative fuels.

Converting to alternative fuels would be extremely expensive for oil companies and automobile owners alike, analysts said. And the major oil companies are trying to do everything they can to clean gasoline enough to satisfy tightening air quality standards.

 investment banking firm Salomon Brothers, stated in a report issued last week: "Arco and other refiners have an important stake in demonstrating that they can go a long distance toward meeting the clean air goals of the Federal and state governments in manufacturing reformulated (but crude-oil-based) gasoline, rather than being forced to meet these goals."
