The honor was announced during the Storage Networking World Gala Dinner that took place on Wednesday, October 26 at the JW Marriott Grande Lakes Resort in Orlando, Florida. CTRC will also be recognized on the event website, in an event press release and featured in a special supplement of IDG's Computerworld magazine, together with the additional category award and honorable mention recipients.

Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) sees about 350 patients a day - approximately 150 patients in Radiology Oncology and 200 in Medical Oncology. Every patient generates multiple images during each visit. "For instance, our doctors are always tracking the size of tumors," Luter says. The patients come back every day, typically for four to six weeks. A patient could generate between 125 and 500 Mbytes of data, for a total of about 15 terabytes of the online data. This and the need to comply with the Health and Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) led Luter to install a second tier of storage, with privacy and long-term storage in mind. CTRC reviewed the options available, and decided upon a solution from Archivas called the Archivas Cluster or ArC.

Now, when a CTRC file enters the ArC archive, its raw data is permanently associated with metadata and policies. This is critical in that CTRC's fixed content data is now defined automatically when the application writes a source file to ArC. After the file is archived, it cannot be modified or deleted before its CTRC defined retention period expires. The metadata includes information that helps identify its archive objects, such as its author - i.e., the doctor and creation date. It also includes policy settings such as retention period and file protection that serve as parameters for the object's policies. Moreover, CTRC has set policies through the ArC solution that determine the archived object's behavior during its lifecycle, within the archive. Because each archive object encapsulates its own policies, it is responsible for its own behavior within the archive - for example, determining whether its content is authentic, or its retention period is still in force. Object-based policies ensure that the archive data is always safe, available and authentic.

"With ArC, nobody is ever able to change a record," Luter says, "and on the fly, we are able to quickly find and print any record - a diagnosis, prescription, X-ray, CT-scan, ultrasound, etc... - as needed."

CTRC is a private, non-profit, freestanding outpatient cancer center, in partnership with the University of Texas Health Science Center and is a National Cancer Institute Designated Cancer Center. Needless to say, cost and return on investment (ROI) are critical factors that are considered when making a technology investment decision.

When CTRC was deciding on what long term fixed content archiving solution to implement, it reviewed various technologies and vendors, as well as the existing technology it already had in place to meet its online storage area network (SAN) needs.
