Architext Acquires City.Net; Expands Excite with Local, Regional Information.


MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 20, 1995-- Architext Software Inc. today announced it has acquired City.Net.

As a result of this acquisition, the Excite(tm) media navigation service will include both global and regional services for the Internet.

City.Net, based in Portland, OR, is the most popular local and regional resource on the Internet. It has been providing local and regional information about restaurants, civic and cultural events, entertainment, business, government and travel since its founding in 1994. Over the past three months, it has been servicing about three million requests per month.

City.Net, Kraus said, already provides local businesses and advertisers with Internet access See how to access the Internet.  to more easily identified local markets and provides users with easy access to local information.

"We will strengthen this capability by adding Excite's technology which connects people with content providers and assures that content providers reach their target markets," Kraus said.

Kraus said the acquisition of City.Net means Excite will become the seventh-most linked-to site on the Internet, based on Architext and industry estimates. Excite is available on the Net at http://www.excite.com. and contains a separate tab for City.Net.

City.Net was founded in May, 1994, by Kevin Altis, originally as a local, up-to-date guide to businesses, entertainment and government in the Portland area. It has expanded to include information about cities and regions throughout the world.

Excite media navigation service was launched on the Internet in early October of this year and features more than 40,000 professionally-written reviews of web sites as well as technology permitting search by topic or concept rather than by specific word only. Recently, Excite is averaging 600,000-700,000 hits per day. Excite is complemented by "excite for web servers," which adds media navigation capabilities to local web sites.
