Architecture Retirement/Continuing care retirement community.EDGEHILL BY MARRIOTT Stamford, Conn. A warm welcome at every door It's clear upon approach to Edgehill by Marriott that one has arrived. The curb appeal is thanks to a careful blending of fieldstone field·stone n. A stone occurring naturally in fields, often used as a building material. Noun 1. fieldstone - stone that occurs naturally in fields; often used as building material and shake, of details accentuated with deep red color. And, of course, it's all by design. Before this project was on the boards, three goals were established: to create an attractive, upscale environment suited to the tastes of discriminating seniors; to design a visually stimulating environment that would encourage community interaction; and to maintain a constant connection to the out-of-doors. At Edgehill's core, DiMella Shaffer Associates designed a three-story structure containing first-floor common spaces, second- and third-floor skilled nursing. Four attached wings are devoted to three levels of independent living units. Site constraints dictated underground parking, plus a lower-level pool and fitness facility. To meet project goals, the architectural team set its sights on using high-end materials--stone and cedar outside, mahogany inside--alongside elegant furniture and fabrics. The architects also relied on natural light to enhance the handsomeness of the project, and to offer orientation for residents traveling from space to space. For example, jurors noted the detailing in the pool area, where a wall of glass doors floods the interior with light and provides access to a walled outdoor terrace. An innovative architectural detail received jury notice as well: the recessed re·cess n. 1. a. A temporary cessation of the customary activities of an engagement, occupation, or pursuit. b. The period of such cessation. See Synonyms at pause. 2. entry door to each residential unit has a convenient staging area/package shelf. JURY'S TAKE: Lorraine Hiatt: The plans appear fairly creative in terms of the units and social areas. It is an interesting model of stacking. Martha Child: The fieldstone as well as the cedar shake and the stained wood make a gorgeous blend of elements. Jane Rohde: Nice hip roof and projection with combined bays ... very well done. Rob Volzer: And as an interior detail, the resident room entries are nicely articulated with a wood surround and a convenient package shelf.
