Architecture Center to put fashion first in new exhibition.


The Center for Architecture will kick off the New Year with a presentation of fashion design.

In a major exhibition entitled "The Fashion of Architecture: Constructing the Architecture of Fashion" (on view from January 11 to March 11), visitors will be encouraged to investigate the contemporary relationship between fashion and architecture. Studies in the congruencies between the two disciplines will provide a framework for understanding current trends in visual culture.

A featured double-height installation by Lucy Orta will blur the boundaries between interior environments and outdoor structures.

The connection between fashion and architecture is explored by a select set of practitioners today. "The Fashion of Architecture" will consider the dialogue between modern architecture and contemporary fashion in concept, as well as practice. Architects and interior designers are borrowing techniques such as pleating and draping draping,

The curatorial concept will be organized around themes specific to both fields, including structure and surface, deconstruction and unveiling and spatial dynamics and urban identities. The exhibition design will penetrate multiple levels in the Center, connecting the galleries through a fluid cabling system that will weave the exhibition elements together.

Accompanying programs will explore these ideas and more, including the role of branding in designing spaces for fashion. Featured events will include a family day with the Center for Architecture Foundation, a symposium and a curator talk with Bradley Quinn and exhibition designer Margaret Helfand Margaret Helfand (born 1947, Pasadena, California - died June 20 2007, Manhattan) was a Manhattan architect and urban planner who served as president of the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The exhibition will be curated by Bradley Quinn, a New York-based British author and curator who has presented the work of leading designers and architects in galleries and museums around the world. It will be based on his critically-acclaimed book "The Fashion of Architecture," published in 2003.
