An establishment that houses chronically ill, usually elderly patients, and provides long-term nursing care, rehabilitation, and other services.
 where demand for private rooms exceeded supply, expansion became the operative word, creating luxurious new suites and spaces. All were planned in keeping with Maplewood Nursing Home's hospitality model, designed as the aesthetic equivalent of a fine home or hotel.

To help Maplewood adjust its offerings to market needs, architect Martin Fredrickson, Kohlstaedt & Fredrickson Architects, P.C., and interior designer Ferguson Cook, F.C. Design Associates/Exhibits & More, delivered 22 patio suites, 24 private rooms, and five semi-private rooms with a new portico and atrium entrance/lounge. Our jurors liked the space's richly articulated detailing and good lighting, and applauded the amenities. Each new suite features French doors opening onto a private patio, interior vaulted ceilings, and a refreshment area with sink and refrigerator. Even a private room at Maplewood provides an accessible bath with shower, enough living space for a loveseat and three-position lift chair, and a centrally controlled lighting system operable operable /op·er·a·ble/ (op´er-ah-b'l) subject to being operated upon with a reasonable degree of safety; appropriate for surgical removal.

Extensive landscaping developed by landscape architect Douglas C. McCord includes a wheelchair-accessible nature path, plus a waterfall feature and sculpture in a new central courtyard. It is such attention to spaces both public and private that completes the hotel-like effect.
